How Dropspot works
Dropspot is a no-login, room-based tool for sharing files, links and text between devices on any network — not just the same Wi-Fi. You create a room, get a short 6-character code, and anyone who enters that code (or scans the QR) lands in the same room instantly. One person can be on home broadband and another on mobile data on the other side of the world; as long as they share the code, they share the room. There is no account, no app to install and nothing to configure.
Rooms, codes and expiry
Every room is temporary by design. When you create one you choose how long it lives — from 10 minutes up to 8 hours — and a background cleanup permanently removes the room and everything in it once that time is up. You can protect a room with an optional PIN, cap how many devices may join, and delete any individual item by hand at any moment. Because rooms auto-expire, nothing you share lingers longer than you asked for.
How files, text and links are shared
Text and links you post appear in the room for everyone almost immediately. Files are uploaded to fast, secure temporary storage and then show up in the room for every device to download — they work across every network and survive a page refresh. Everything you share lives for the room's lifetime and is deleted together when the room expires — there are no separate per-item timers. Each file can be up to 50 MB, and a single room can hold up to 100 MB of files at a time. A live capacity bar shows how much room storage is left, and you can select several files and download them together as one ZIP.
Is it private and secure?
Uploads go to private storage that is only reachable through the room, never a public URL, and everything is deleted automatically when the room expires. Adding a PIN means a code alone is not enough to join, and any member can remove content the moment it is no longer needed. Since rooms are short-lived and login-free, there is no long-term account or history tying shared content back to you.
When to use Dropspot
- Moving a document, photo or screenshot from your phone to your laptop (or the reverse) without cables, email or a messaging app.
- Handing a file or link to someone nearby whose device is on a completely different network.
- Sharing a quick note, address or link across your own devices and having it disappear on its own.
- Sending a batch of files to a teammate and letting them grab everything at once as a ZIP.
- Any quick, throwaway transfer where signing up for an account would be overkill.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account to use Dropspot?
No. Dropspot is completely login-free. You create a room, get a 6-character code, and share that code (or the QR) with anyone. They join instantly — no sign-up, no app install, nothing to download. The room and its contents automatically expire after the time you choose.
Does it work across different networks?
Yes. Unlike local-only tools that need everyone on the same Wi-Fi, Dropspot works across any network using room codes. One person can be on home Wi-Fi and another on mobile data on the other side of the world — as long as both have the room code, they share the same room. Text, links and files all sync through secure cloud storage, so everyone in the room can grab them on any network.
How are files transferred?
Files up to 50 MB each are uploaded to fast, secure temporary storage — they appear for everyone in the room to download, work across any network, survive a page refresh, and stay for as long as the room lives. Each room can hold up to 100 MB of files at a time. Just drag a file onto the drop zone or click to choose one.
Is my data private?
Text, links and files are stored only for the lifetime you choose and are then permanently deleted. Uploads go to private storage that is only reachable through the room and are auto-deleted on expiry. You can also protect any room with a PIN and delete any item manually at any time.
How long does content stay available?
You choose when you create the room: from 10 minutes up to 8 hours. Everything you share — text, links and files — lives for the room's lifetime and is permanently deleted the moment the room expires. There are no separate per-item timers, and nothing lingers longer than you asked for.
Why does it warn me about backgrounding the tab?
Dropspot keeps a live connection open to the room so everyone can see who is present in real time. Some browsers suspend background tabs to save battery, which can pause that connection and briefly drop you from the live device list. Keep the tab visible during a transfer to stay shown as present.
Is there a file size limit?
Each file can be up to 50 MB, and a single room can hold up to 100 MB of files at a time. Uploads use secure temporary storage — fast, reliable, downloadable by everyone in the room, and kept until the room expires, when they are deleted automatically.
