How the decimal-to-fraction converter works
Every terminating decimal is really a fraction whose denominator is a power of ten. The digit places after the decimal point tell you which power: one place means tenths, two means hundredths, three means thousandths, and so on. This converter reads how many decimal places you typed, writes the number over the matching power of ten, and then reduces the fraction to its lowest terms.
Reducing relies on the greatest common divisor (GCD) — the largest number that divides both the top and the bottom exactly. Dividing both by their GCD gives the simplest equivalent fraction. For example, 0.75 starts as 75/100; the GCD of 75 and 100 is 25, so dividing both gives 3/4. The tool also shows the result as a mixed number when the value is greater than one, such as 2.25 becoming 2 1/4.
This is useful in cooking, woodworking and maths, where fractions are often clearer than decimals — a tape measure shows 3/4 inch, not 0.75 inch. The calculation runs instantly in your browser. For repeating decimals, enter as many digits as you need for the precision you want; for the reverse operation, the Fraction to Decimal converter divides the numerator by the denominator.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a decimal to a fraction?
Write the decimal over a power of ten (0.75 = 75/100), then divide the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor to simplify (75/100 = 3/4). The converter does both steps automatically.
What about decimals greater than one?
A value like 2.25 is shown both as an improper fraction (9/4) and as a mixed number (2 1/4), so you can use whichever form you need.
Does it handle repeating decimals?
It converts the digits you enter as a terminating decimal. For a repeating decimal, enter enough digits for the precision you need; the result will be a close fraction.
