How image cropping works
Image cropping extracts a rectangular region from the original image by specifying the x and y coordinates of the top-left corner along with the desired width and height. The Canvas API's drawImage() method supports source parameters that let you select any sub-region of the source image and render only those pixels onto a new canvas.
Cropping does not resample or interpolate pixels — it simply discards everything outside the selected area. This means the cropped region retains the exact same quality as the original, and no data within the crop boundaries is altered.

What different aspect ratios mean
How aspect ratios are used across photography, video, and social media.
Photographer
Reframes RAW exports and selects the perfect composition for prints, client proofs, and online galleries without uploading to third-party tools.
Social Media User
Crops photos to ideal aspect ratios for Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube thumbnails directly in the browser.
Graphic Designer
Prepares screenshots and design mockups to fit specific canvas sizes for client presentations and portfolio showcases.
Web Developer
Crops banner images and hero sections to match responsive breakpoints and design specifications without leaving the browser.
| Aspect ratio | Name | Best for | Common dimensions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | Square | Profile pictures, Instagram, icons | 1080×1080 |
| 4:3 | Standard | Print, tablets, monitors | 1024×768 |
| 16:9 | Widescreen | Video, wallpapers, web | 1920×1080 |
| 3:2 | Photography | DSLR, prints, photo books | 2400×1600 |
| 21:9 | Cinematic | Movies, ultra-wide displays | 2560×1080 |
How to use the Image Cropper
Upload an image
Select any image from your device. The crop overlay appears automatically over your image.
Select crop area
Drag the overlay to reposition or drag corner handles to resize. Click a preset ratio to lock the crop shape.
Download

Tips for cropping images
Use the rule of thirds
Place key subjects along imaginary grid lines that divide the image into thirds horizontally and vertically. This creates a more balanced, engaging composition.
Leave room for text overlays
If you plan to add text later, leave negative space (a clear area) in your crop. The center or one side works well — avoid cluttered areas.
Check final dimensions
Always verify the cropped pixel dimensions match your target platform. Cropping to 16:9 gives the right shape, but the pixel count depends on source resolution.
What is aspect ratio?
Aspect ratio describes the width-to-height proportion of an image. A 16:9 image is always wider than tall, while a 1:1 image is perfectly square. Choosing the right aspect ratio ensures your image fits its intended display without letterboxing or cropping unexpectedly.
Composition techniques
Good cropping follows composition principles. The rule of thirds places subjects along grid intersections. Symmetry creates balanced, pleasing frames. Leading lines draw the eye toward the focal point. Cropping removes distracting elements at the edges to direct attention to the main subject.
Crop vs resize
Cropping removes outer pixels to change composition and aspect ratio. Resizing scales the entire image up or down without removing any content. Use cropping first to get the right composition, then resizing to match exact dimension requirements.
Print size considerations
When cropping for print, consider the required DPI and final print dimensions. An 8×10 print at 300 DPI needs 2400×3000 pixels. Avoid cropping so tightly that the remaining resolution is insufficient for a sharp print. Always start with the highest resolution source available.
Frequently asked questions
What is image cropping?
Cropping is the process of removing unwanted outer areas from an image. It changes the composition and aspect ratio without changing the overall scale of the image content.
How do I use the crop overlay?
Drag the overlay to reposition it. Drag the corner handles to resize it. Choose a preset aspect ratio to lock the shape of the crop area.
What aspect ratios are available?
Freeform (no constraint), 1:1 (square), 4:3 (standard), 16:9 (widescreen), 3:2 (photography), and 21:9 (cinematic).
Does cropping reduce image quality?
No. Cropping removes pixels but does not alter the remaining pixels. The cropped area retains the same quality as the original.
Can I crop to exact pixel dimensions?
Use freeform mode and drag the overlay to your desired area. The crop dimensions are displayed on the overlay for reference.
What is the difference between crop and resize?
Cropping removes parts of the image to change composition. Resizing changes the overall dimensions of the whole image. Use both tools together for full control.
What image formats are supported?
All browser-supported formats including JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and AVIF.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All cropping happens in your browser using the Canvas API. Your file never leaves your device.
What is the best aspect ratio for Instagram?
Square posts use 1:1. Portrait posts use 4:5. Stories use 9:16. This tool supports 1:1 natively.
Can I crop and resize at the same time?
This tool crops only. To also change dimensions, download the cropped image and use the Image Resizer tool.
