PDF Page Numberer — Add Page Numbers to PDF

Add page numbers (position, start number, format) to any PDF — all in your browser.

How page numbering works

This tool takes your uploaded PDF and draws a page number on each page at the position you choose. The original content of every page stays exactly as it was — only the page number is added as a new text layer. The result is a brand-new PDF with numbered pages that you can download immediately.

The numbering uses the pdf-lib library to load your PDF, iterate through each page, and draw text at precise coordinates. The font (Helvetica) is embedded in the output so the numbers render correctly on any device. You control the starting number, which page gets the first number, the position on the page, the display format, and the font size.

Use cases for page numbering

Adding page numbers is one of the most common PDF enhancements. Whether you are preparing a business report, submitting a thesis, or organising a manuscript, page numbers help readers navigate your document and keep pages in order when printed or separated.

📊

Business reports

Numbered pages make professional reports easy to reference in meetings. Executives can say "turn to page 12" and everyone lands on the same chart or data table.

🎓

Theses and dissertations

Universities often require page numbers in specific positions. Start numbering after the table of contents and use Roman numerals for front matter and Arabic for the main body.

✍️

Manuscripts

Publishers and editors rely on page numbers during review. Numbered pages make it easy to discuss specific passages without confusion.

⚖️

Legal documents

Contracts, affidavits and court filings must have numbered pages to ensure completeness. Missing pages are immediately obvious when numbers skip.

Tips for great results

Skip the cover page

Set "First page to number" to 2 (or later) to leave your title or cover page unnumbered. This is the standard approach for reports and theses where the first page is a title page.

Custom starting numbers

If your document is part of a larger set, set the start number to continue the sequence from a previous document. For example, start at 25 if the preceding document ended at page 24.

Choose the right position

Bottom centre is the most common and professional placement for page numbers. Top right works well for documents that will be stapled at the top left. Bottom left suits right-to-left documents or certain academic style guides.

Large files may take a moment

PDFs with hundreds of pages or large file sizes use more browser memory. The tool shows a loading state while processing — please wait for it to complete before trying another operation.

Roman numerals for front matter

Use the Roman numeral format (i, ii, iii) for preface pages, tables of contents, and introductory sections. Switch to Arabic numbering for the main body. You can run the tool multiple times on different page ranges to achieve mixed numbering.

Security and privacy

This PDF page numberer runs entirely in your browser using the pdf-lib JavaScript library. Your PDF file is never uploaded to any server, transmitted over the network, or stored in the cloud. All processing — loading the PDF, reading its pages, drawing the page numbers, and saving the result — happens locally on your device.

Because your document never leaves your computer, you can safely use this tool with confidential business reports, legal documents, academic manuscripts, and personal files. There are no privacy policies, data retention periods, or server logs to worry about. No cookies, trackers, or analytics scripts are involved in the numbering process.

The only caveat is that closing the browser tab or refreshing the page clears all loaded data from memory. Always complete your numbering and download the result before navigating away. For particularly sensitive documents, close other tabs that may contain third-party scripts and use a trusted device on a private network.
