How percent concentration is calculated
The core idea in one line: percent concentration is just "part per hundred" — how much solute sits in every 100 units of solution.
There are three flavours, differing only in whether you measure the parts by mass or volume:
w/v % = (g ÷ mL) × 100
mass/volume — g per 100 mL (saline, IV fluids)
w/w % = (g ÷ g) × 100
mass/mass — g per 100 g (alloys, food labels)
v/v % = (mL ÷ mL) × 100
volume/volume — mL per 100 mL (alcohol ABV)
All three rearrange the same way: solute = % × solution ÷ 100, and solution = solute × 100 ÷ %. The denominator is always the whole solution, not the solvent alone.

Given: dissolve 9 g of NaCl and make up to 1000 mL of solution. What is the w/v percent?

Given: you need 250 g of a 4% (w/w) sugar solution. How much sugar?
Two ideas that trip students up
1. Higher % = denser packing
Two equal beakers: the right one holds a higher percent, so it's visibly packed with more solute particles per unit of solution. Percent is a density of "stuff dissolved."
2. Divide by the whole solution
The percentage uses the total solution volume (solute + solvent after mixing), shown as the full liquid column — not just the solvent you started with.

IV fluids, saline, dextrose and topical creams are all labelled in percent. w/v is the everyday clinical language of concentration because it needs no molar mass.
🍷 Food & drink
Alcohol by volume (ABV) is v/v percent; sugar and salt on nutrition panels are effectively w/w. The same three formulas underpin recipes and quality control.
🏭 Industry & cleaning
Bleach, disinfectants and alloys are specified by percent. Getting a disinfectant to the right w/v strength is the difference between effective and useless.
Common misconceptions
"Percent is per 100 units of solvent."
It's per 100 units of solution — solute plus solvent, measured after mixing. You make the total up to the mark, not add solute to 100 mL of water.
"w/v, w/w and v/v give the same number."
They usually don't, because density links mass and volume differently for each substance. Always state which type — a 5% solution is ambiguous otherwise.
"Percent concentration is the same as molarity."
No. Percent compares amounts without molar mass; molarity is moles per litre. Converting between them needs the molar mass and often the density.
"w/v uses grams over grams."
w/v is grams of solute over millilitres of solution (g/mL × 100). Its "100" represents 100 mL, so 1% w/v = 1 g per 100 mL = 10 g/L.

What is percent concentration?
It expresses how much solute is in a solution as a percentage. The three common types are mass/volume (w/v, grams per 100 mL), mass/mass (w/w, grams per 100 g) and volume/volume (v/v, mL per 100 mL).
What is the w/v percent formula?
Mass/volume percent = (mass of solute in grams ÷ volume of solution in mL) × 100. So a 5% (w/v) solution has 5 g of solute in every 100 mL of solution — e.g. saline and IV fluids are quoted this way.
What is the difference between w/w and v/v percent?
w/w (mass/mass) is grams of solute per 100 g of solution and is temperature-independent; v/v (volume/volume) is mL of solute per 100 mL of solution and is used for liquid-in-liquid mixtures like alcohol (ABV).
Is percent concentration the same as molarity?
No. Percent concentration compares amounts (mass or volume) without needing the molar mass, while molarity is moles per litre. You can convert between them if you know the density and molar mass.
How do I read "0.9% saline"?
It is 0.9% w/v: 0.9 g of sodium chloride per 100 mL of solution, i.e. 9 g per litre. That matches the salt concentration of blood, which is why it is called physiological or normal saline.
Does the percent type change the number?
Yes — the same solution can have different w/v, w/w and v/v percentages because mass and volume are not interchangeable. Always state which type you mean.
