About race time prediction
Predicting your race time from a recent result is a powerful training and pacing tool. The Riegel formula, developed by exercise physiologist Pete Riegel, is based on the observation that running speed declines in a predictable, mathematical way as distance increases. It uses a fatigue factor (typically 1.06) that represents how much your pace slows per doubling of distance. This predictor is widely used by runners, coaches and race organisers. How it works
The Riegel formula states that T2 = T1 × (D2 / D1)^1.06, where T1 is your known time for distance D1, and T2 is the predicted time for distance D2. The exponent 1.06 is the fatigue factor — it represents how much your pace slows as distance increases. A higher exponent (like 1.10) would predict a greater slowdown, more typical for less trained runners. A lower exponent (1.03) predicts less slowdown, typical for elite runners who can maintain pace across distances more effectively.
The formula explained
Riegel formula: T₂ = T₁ × (D₂ / D₁)^1.06
Where T₁ = reference time, D₁ = reference distance, D₂ = target distance, and 1.06 is the fatigue factor. The formula can be rearranged to estimate your predicted pace for any distance.

Tips for accurate prediction
Use a recent, honest effort
The most accurate predictions come from a race effort within the past 2 months. Training runs and easy efforts underestimate your potential.
Adjust for tough courses
If your target race has significant hills or is on a trail, add 5–10% to the predicted time. The formula assumes a flat, fast course.
Temperature matters
Performance declines above 15°C (60°F). For every 5°C above 15°C, expect roughly 1–2% slower times. Hot races require adjusting your expectations.

Can I use any distance as input?
Yes — you can use any distance as your reference, but it works best when the input and target distances are within a reasonable range. Using a 5K time to predict a marathon is less accurate than using a half marathon time.
What happens if I enter a shorter target distance?
The formula works both ways. If you enter a marathon time and use a 5K as the target, it will predict a faster time for the shorter distance. This is useful for estimating your potential on shorter races.
Does the formula account for terrain or weather?
No — the Riegel formula assumes ideal conditions on a flat course. Real-world factors like hills, heat, humidity and wind will affect your actual performance, especially on longer distances.
Can I use this for other sports?
The Riegel formula was developed for running but has been adapted for swimming, cycling and rowing. The fatigue factor (1.06) may differ for non-running sports, but it gives a reasonable first estimate.
