How trip planning works

Trip planning divides the total route distance by your EV's range per charge to determine how many charging stops are needed. Each segment is calculated based on battery capacity, efficiency, and the optimal 10–80% charging window.

Total charging time adds up the time spent at each stop, factoring in charger power and the amount of energy that needs to be replenished per segment.

Tips for a smooth EV road trip

Plan stops at 10-80%

The fastest charging occurs between 10% and 80% state of charge. Plan your stops to arrive with low battery and leave around 80% to minimize total charging time. The charge curve drops sharply above 80%.

Precondition the battery

Use your EV's navigation system to route to the charger so the battery preconditioning activates. A warm battery charges significantly faster than a cold one, especially in winter when preconditioning can double charging speed.

Combine stops with meals

Choose chargers located near restaurants, restrooms, or attractions. A 30-40 minute charging session is the perfect time for a meal break. This turns charging downtime into a productive or enjoyable stop.

The 10-80% rule

Almost all modern EVs have a charging curve that delivers maximum power between 10% and 80% state of charge. Below 10%, the battery management system limits power to protect the battery. Above 80%, charging speed gradually tapers to avoid overheating. For example, a 150 kW-rated charger may deliver 150 kW at 20%, 80 kW at 80%, and only 30 kW at 95%. This makes 10-80% the sweet spot for road trip charging.

Charging network comparison

Tesla\'s Supercharger network remains the gold standard with the most reliable and widespread coverage. CCS networks are rapidly catching up, with Electrify America and EVgo expanding in the US and Ionity and Fastned in Europe. CHAdeMO is being phased out.
