How strong passwords are generated

Strong passwords are generated using a cryptographically secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues()), which produces unpredictable, unbiased random values suitable for security-sensitive applications.

The tool builds a character pool from your selected types (lowercase, uppercase, numbers, symbols), then randomly picks characters from that pool for each position until the chosen length is reached. The optional "avoid ambiguous" filter removes look-alike characters (l, 1, I, O, 0) for better readability.

About this password generator

Reusing simple passwords is one of the biggest security risks online. This generator creates strong, unique, random passwords using your browser's secure random number generator — so nothing is ever transmitted or stored. Pick a length, choose which character types to include, and copy your new password straight into a password manager. Generate a random numeric code with the Random Number Generator, or share a link securely via the QR Code Generator.

How to use it

  1. Set the length (12–16+ is recommended).
  2. Choose which character types to include.
  3. Click ↻ for a new password and "Copy" to grab it.
  4. Store it safely — ideally in a password manager.

When to use this tool

Strong passwords are essential for protecting your online accounts, yet most people still use weak or reused passwords out of convenience. Use this generator whenever you're creating a new account, updating an old password, or setting up a service that requires a secure credential. IT administrators generate temporary passwords for new employees. Developers create secure API keys and application secrets. Anyone concerned about their digital security should use a unique, strong password for every site and service.

What different password strength levels mean

Password strength is determined by length and the number of character types used. Here is how each level maps to real-world security.

Very strong16+ chars, all 4 types — years to crack
Strong12–15 chars, 3–4 types — months to crack
Fair8–11 chars, 2–3 types — weeks to crack
Weak6–7 chars, 1–2 types — days to crack
Very weakUnder 6 chars or single type — minutes to crack

Tips for password security

Never reuse passwords

Each account should have a unique password. If one service is breached, reused passwords put all your other accounts at risk.

Use a password manager

Password managers generate, store, and auto-fill strong passwords for every site. You only need to remember one master password.

Enable two-factor authentication

A strong password is your first defence. Adding 2FA provides a second layer of protection against unauthorised access.

Frequently asked questions

Are these passwords safe to use?

Yes. They’re generated using your browser’s cryptographically secure random generator, and nothing is sent to any server or saved anywhere.

What makes a strong password?

Length matters most. Aim for at least 12–16 characters and mix uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols.

What does "avoid ambiguous characters" do?

It removes look-alike characters such as l, 1, I, O and 0, so the password is easier to read and type correctly.

Is the password stored anywhere?

No. Once you leave or refresh the page it’s gone. Save it somewhere safe, ideally a password manager.

How is the password strength determined?

Strength is based on length and character variety. A score from "Very weak" to "Very strong" helps you gauge how secure the password is at a glance.

What length should I choose?

16 characters or more is recommended for strong security. For most purposes, 12 characters with mixed character types is a good minimum.

Should I use symbols in my passwords?

Yes — including symbols significantly increases the number of possible combinations, making the password much harder to crack.

Can I generate multiple passwords at once?

The generator creates one password at a time. Click the refresh button to generate a new one instantly.

How does the "Avoid ambiguous" option help?

Characters like l (lowercase L), 1 (one), I (uppercase i), O and 0 (zero) look similar. Removing them prevents transcription errors when copying or reading the password aloud.

Should I use a password manager with generated passwords?

Absolutely. A password manager securely stores all your unique passwords and auto-fills them, so you only need to remember one master password.
