How dice rolling and coin flips work
Digital dice rolling uses pseudo-random number generation to simulate the outcome of a physical die. For a dN die, the generator produces a random integer between 1 and N inclusive. Each value has an equal probability of 1/N, matching the uniform distribution of a fair physical die. The coin flip is simulated as a d2, where 1 represents heads and 2 represents tails.
The session tally tracks the frequency of each result across all rolls in the current session, resetting only when you clear it. The total sum of all current roll values is displayed below each batch of results. When rolling multiple dice, the individual values and the sum are both shown.
Probability explained
Worked example
Rolling 3d6 (three six-sided dice):
Tabletop RPGs
Roll d20 for skill checks, d6 for damage, or any combination for your Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder sessions.
Board Games
Replace lost dice or add extra randomness to any board game. Roll d6 for Monopoly, d10 for war games, or flip a coin for any binary decision.
Decision Making
Stuck between two choices? Flip a coin. Need to pick from more options? Assign each to a number and roll the appropriate die.
Probability Teaching
Demonstrate probability concepts like uniform distribution, expected value, and the central limit theorem with live dice rolls.
How to use the dice roller and coin flip generator
Choose your die
Select the dice type from d4 to d100, or choose Coin for a d2 coin flip.
Set quantity
Enter how many dice or coins to roll in one go. Results are shown individually and summed.
Roll and track
Roll as many times as you like. The tally builds up automatically until you clear it.
Tips for dice and coin flips
Use d100 for percentage rolls
A d100 (or percentile die) gives a result from 1 to 100, perfect for percentage-based checks in many RPG systems.
Roll multiple dice for bell curves
Rolling multiple dice and summing them creates a bell curve distribution where middle values are more common than extremes — more realistic for many game mechanics.
The tally helps detect bias
After many rolls, the tally should show roughly equal counts for each value. Significant deviations might suggest your physical die is biased.

Frequently asked questions
What dice types are supported?
d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, and d100. Also supports coin flips (d2).
Can I roll multiple dice at once?
Yes. Use the quantity selector to roll up to 20 dice or coins in one click.
Are the rolls truly random?
The generator uses Math.random() which provides a good approximation of randomness for gaming purposes. It is not cryptographically secure but is suitable for tabletop RPGs.
Does the tally persist?
The tally resets when you click "Clear Tally". It persists across individual rolls within the session.
Can I use this for coin flips?
Yes. Select d2 from the dice type dropdown and quantity 1 for a single coin flip, or more for multiple flips.
