How unit conversion works

Unit conversion is based on a simple ratio principle: every unit has a known conversion factor relative to a base unit. For length, meters are the base. For weight, kilograms are the base. To convert between two units, the tool multiplies your value by the ratio of the two conversion factors: Result = Value × Factor[from] ÷ Factor[to].

Temperature is the exception — Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin use offset formulas rather than simple multiplication, because they have different zero points. Our converter applies the exact formulas: °C to °F = (C × 9/5) + 32 and °F to °C = (F - 32) × 5/9, with Kelvin as an absolute offset from Celsius.
