How the converter works
Converting a Gregorian date to the Hijri calendar means translating from a solar system of timekeeping to a lunar one. The Gregorian year follows the sun and runs about 365 days; the Hijri year follows the moon and runs about 354 days. Because the lunar year is shorter, a fixed Gregorian date moves forward through the Hijri months a little each year. This tool reads the date you choose and returns its exact Islamic equivalent — day, month name and year — in an instant.
The conversion is powered by the Umm al-Qura calendar built into your browser’s internationalisation engine. This is the official calculated Islamic calendar used in Saudi Arabia and widely relied upon for administrative purposes. Because the work happens entirely on your device, no date you enter is ever uploaded or stored.
It is ideal for finding the Islamic date of a birth, a wedding, a historical milestone or a public event. Keep in mind that calculated dates can sit a day either side of a local moon-sighting, so for religious occasions such as the start of Ramadan or Eid, confirm with your community’s announcement.
Why Hijri and Gregorian dates drift
Lunar vs solar
The Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so Islamic dates move earlier through the Western calendar each year and complete a full cycle in roughly 33 years.
Variable month length
Hijri months are 29 or 30 days depending on the moon, so the same Gregorian date can map to slightly different Hijri days in different years.
Worked example
Selecting 1 January 2025 returns roughly 1 Rajab 1446 AH — useful for noting an Islamic anniversary against a Western date.

Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the conversion?
It uses the Umm al-Qura calculated calendar through your browser, which is highly consistent. It can differ from a local moon-sighting by a day, so confirm important religious dates with your local authority.
Why does calculation differ from moon-sighting?
A calculated calendar fixes month lengths by astronomy, while traditional practice begins a month only when the new crescent is actually seen. Visibility depends on weather and location, so the two can differ by a day.
What are the Hijri month names?
They are Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Sha’ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul-Qa’dah and Dhul-Hijjah.
How do I find today’s Hijri date?
Use our Today’s Hijri Date tool, which reads your device date and shows the current Islamic date, month name and year automatically.
