How the Zakat calculator works

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam — an obligatory annual charity of 2.5% on qualifying wealth that has been held for one lunar year. This calculator adds together your zakatable assets, subtracts immediate debts, and compares the result against the nisab so you can see exactly what is owed. Everything runs privately in your browser; nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.

The four asset groups you enter — liquid money, precious metals, business stock and recoverable debts — together form your total zakatable wealth. Personal-use items such as your home, furniture, car and the tools of your trade are excluded, because Zakat targets accumulated wealth rather than the things you live and work with. From the total you subtract debts that are due now, such as an outstanding bill or this month's essential payments.

The calculator then works out the nisab in your own currency from the price per gram you enter. Choose the silver basis (612.36 g) for the more cautious, widely recommended threshold, or the gold basis (87.48 g). If your net wealth reaches the nisab, Zakat is 2.5% of the whole amount; if it falls short, nothing is due this year.

The formula explained

Net zakatable wealth

Wealth = (cash + bank + gold + silver + inventory + receivables) − debts

Nisab threshold

Nisab = grams × price per gram, where grams = 87.48 (gold) or 612.36 (silver).

Zakat due

Zakat = Wealth × 0.025 if Wealth ≥ Nisab, otherwise 0.

Worked example

Someone holds 5,000 in cash and bank, 2,000 of gold, 1,000 of business stock and is owed 500, with 800 of debts due now. Silver price is 0.85 per gram.

Wealth: (5,000 + 2,000 + 1,000 + 500) − 800 = 7,700
Silver nisab: 612.36 × 0.85 = 520.5
Meets nisab? 7,700 ≥ 520.5 → yes
Zakat due: 7,700 × 0.025 = 192.50

Who pays Zakat and when

Annual obligation

Zakat falls due once every lunar year on the wealth you have held above the nisab for that whole year. Many people pick a memorable date — often in Ramadan — as their fixed Zakat anniversary so it is easy to remember and calculate.

Business owners

Traders pay Zakat on the resale value of stock and inventory, plus cash and receivables, after deducting due liabilities. Fixed assets used to run the business — premises, machinery and shelving — are not counted.

Savings and investments

Cash savings, halal investment holdings you can liquidate, and money lent to reliable borrowers are all zakatable. Add their current value to your total before checking the nisab.

Eight categories of recipients

The Qur'an names who may receive Zakat, including the poor, the needy, those in debt and travellers in need. Giving it promptly once calculated keeps the obligation clear and the reward flowing.

Tips for an accurate Zakat calculation

Use a current metal price

The nisab moves with the gold and silver market, so enter today's price per gram in your currency. Even a rough up-to-date figure is far better than an old default, because it decides whether you cross the threshold.

Value gold and silver at resale

Jewellery and coins are valued at what you could sell them for today, not their original purchase price. Weigh the items and multiply by the live price for the closest figure.

Only deduct immediate debts

Subtract bills and payments that are genuinely due now. Long-term obligations are usually deducted only one instalment at a time, so your Zakat is not wiped out by future commitments.

Frequently asked questions

What is the nisab for Zakat?

The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must hold for one lunar year before Zakat becomes due. It is set at the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. If your zakatable wealth is below the nisab, no Zakat is owed.

Should I use the gold or silver nisab?

Many scholars recommend using the silver nisab because it is lower, which means more people qualify to pay Zakat and more of the poor benefit. Using the gold nisab is also accepted. This calculator lets you choose, using the live price you enter.

Which assets count towards Zakat?

Zakat is due on cash, bank balances, gold and silver, business stock and inventory, and money owed to you that you expect to recover. Your personal home, car, clothing and tools of your trade are not counted.

What is the hawl (lunar year)?

The hawl is the requirement that your wealth stays at or above the nisab for one full lunar (Hijri) year. Zakat is then paid on the total you hold on your Zakat anniversary, not on what passed through your hands during the year.
