How the brick calculator works

The brick calculator estimates the total number of bricks required for a wall based on the length, height, brick dimensions, and mortar joint thickness. It calculates the wall area in square feet, determines how many bricks fit per square foot including the mortar joint, and multiplies to get the total brick count.

The standard modular brick measures 7-5/8 inches long by 2-1/4 inches tall by 3-5/8 inches deep. The mortar joint is typically 3/8 inch thick. With these defaults, approximately 7 bricks are needed per square foot of wall surface. The calculator allows you to adjust all these parameters for non-standard brick sizes and joint thicknesses.

Modular brick dimensions follow ASTM C216 (Standard Specification for Facing Brick), and mortar joint thickness follows the recommendations in TMS 602/ACI 530.1 (Specification for Masonry Structures).

The formula explained

Brick face area with mortar

Each brick plus its mortar joint occupies: (brick L + joint) × (brick H + joint). For a standard modular brick with 3/8″ joint: (7.625 + 0.375) × (2.25 + 0.375) = 8 × 2.625 = 21 sq in per brick.

Bricks per square foot

Bricks/sq ft = 144 ÷ brick area in sq in. 144 ÷ 21 = 6.86 bricks per sq ft. We round this to 7 for quick estimates.

Total bricks

Total = wall area × bricks/sq ft × (1 + waste%). A 10′ × 8′ wall is 80 sq ft. 80 × 6.86 × 1.1 (10% waste) = 604 bricks.

Worked example

A garden wall 20′ long and 3′ tall using standard modular bricks (7.625″ × 2.25″) with 3/8″ mortar joint and 10% waste.

Wall area: 20 × 3 = 60 sq ft
Bricks per sq ft: 144 / (8 × 2.625) = 6.86
Base bricks: 60 × 6.86 = 411.6
With 10% waste: 411.6 × 1.1 = 453 bricks

House facade

Calculate bricks for a full house exterior or a partial facade accent wall. Include windows and doors by subtracting their area from the total wall area.

Freestanding garden walls, retaining walls, and raised planter beds all require brick calculations. These small structures are ideal DIY projects where accurate brick counts save money.

Pillar and column

Brick pillars for gates, porches, and fence posts use a different calculation since they are three-dimensional. Calculate each face separately and add them together.

Fireplaces need firebrick for the interior and face brick for the exterior. Firebrick is a different size and material. Calculate the two layers separately and add them together.

Tips for bricklaying

Soak bricks before laying

Dry bricks absorb water from the mortar too quickly, weakening the bond. Soak bricks in water for 10-15 minutes before laying, especially in hot weather. The bricks should be damp but not dripping when laid.

Use a line for level courses

String a mason's line from corner to corner for each course of bricks. This ensures straight, level rows. Check each brick with a level as you go, tapping gently with the trowel handle to adjust.

Strike joints as you go

Finish the mortar joints with a striking tool when the mortar is thumbprint-hard — firm enough to hold a impression but not yet hard. This creates a professional look and seals the joint against water infiltration.

Real-world context

A house facade is rarely a solid rectangle, and that's where most estimating mistakes happen. A 30 ft by 9 ft wall is 270 sq ft, but a single door (3 ft × 7 ft = 21 sq ft) and a window (3 ft × 5 ft = 15 sq ft) remove 36 sq ft, leaving a net 234 sq ft to brick. At 6.86 standard modular bricks per square foot with 10% waste, that comes to 1,766 bricks — about 271 fewer than if the openings had been ignored, which is enough of a difference to matter when bricks are ordered by the pallet.

Garden and retaining walls often use queen-size brick instead of modular, since the larger unit (9-5/8″ × 2-3/4″) means fewer courses and less labor for the same wall height. A 15 ft by 3 ft garden wall in queen brick with a 3/8-inch joint needs 144 ÷ ((9.625+0.375) × (2.75+0.375)) = 4.61 bricks per square foot, so 45 sq ft × 4.61 × 1.05 (5% waste) works out to 218 bricks — noticeably fewer than the roughly 324 standard modular bricks the same wall would need.

Brick pillars are a common add-on for a fence or gate, and they're calculated differently because all four faces count. A 16-inch square pillar, 6 ft tall, has a total face perimeter of about 5.33 ft, giving 5.33 × 6 = 32 sq ft of brick face. With standard modular brick and a 15% waste allowance for the extra cutting pillars require, that's roughly 219 base bricks pushed up to 252 — a reminder that waste percentages should run higher on small, cut-heavy structures than on long straight runs.

Common misconceptions

"All bricks are the same size, so 7 per square foot always applies." Only for standard modular brick. Queen, Norman, Utility, and King size bricks all have different face dimensions, which changes the bricks-per-square-foot figure significantly — queen brick needs roughly a third fewer bricks per square foot than modular. Always check the actual brick dimensions before using a rule-of-thumb count.

"A thicker mortar joint barely changes the brick count." It adds up fast. Going from a 3/8-inch joint to a 1/2-inch joint on standard modular brick drops the bricks-per-square-foot figure from about 6.86 to 6.45 — a roughly 6% reduction. On a large wall that's dozens of fewer bricks needed, but it also means more mortar and a visibly different look, so joint thickness should be set for appearance first and quantity second.
