How the mulch calculator works
The mulch calculator estimates the volume of mulch needed for a garden bed based on its length, width, and desired depth. It calculates cubic feet, converts to cubic yards, and estimates the number of standard 2-cubic-foot bags required.
Mulch is sold both in bags (typically 2 cu ft) and by the cubic yard for bulk delivery. A cubic yard covers approximately 108 square feet at 3 inches deep. The calculator shows both measurements so you can compare the cost of bagged versus bulk mulch for your project.
Recommended depth ranges follow extension-service landscaping guidance (e.g. university cooperative extension programs), which generally recommend 2-4 inches of organic mulch depending on bed type and climate.

The formula explained
Volume in cubic feet
V = L × W × (D/12). For a 12′ × 8′ bed at 3 inches: 12 × 8 × (3/12) = 24 cu ft.
Cubic yards
CY = V / 27. 24 / 27 = 0.89 cu yd. You would order 1 cubic yard from the bulk supplier.
Bag count
Bags = V ÷ 2 (for 2 cu ft bags). 24 / 2 = 12 bags.

Flower beds
Annual mulching of flower beds suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and adds a finished look to the landscape. Calculate each bed separately and add the totals for a single order.
Tree rings
Circular tree rings need mulch calculated by the area of the ring around the tree trunk. Measure the radius of the ring subtract the trunk area. The calculator works for any rectangular approximation.
Vegetable garden
Mulch vegetable beds with straw, shredded leaves, or compost. A 2-inch layer is sufficient for vegetable gardens. Avoid fresh wood chips in vegetable beds as they can tie up nitrogen as they decompose.
Foundation planting

Tips for mulching
Do not pile mulch against trunks
Volcano mulching — piling mulch high against tree trunks — suffocates the bark and promotes rot, disease, and insect infestation. Keep mulch 2-3 inches away from tree trunks and shrub stems. The mulch ring should be flat and donut-shaped, not piled like a volcano.
Apply mulch after weeding
Remove all existing weeds before applying fresh mulch. A layer of cardboard or landscape fabric underneath the mulch provides additional weed suppression. Without this preparation, weed seeds already in the soil will grow up through the new mulch layer.
Top up annually
Organic mulch decomposes over time, adding nutrients to the soil but also thinning out. Plan to top up your mulch every spring. The calculator works for both initial application and annual top-ups — just use 1-2 inches for a refresh layer instead of the full 3 inches.
Real-world context
A long landscaped border along a fence line or driveway is a common bulk-order scenario. A 40 ft by 5 ft bed mulched at the standard 3-inch depth needs 40 × 5 × (3/12) = 50 cubic feet, or about 1.85 cubic yards — right at the point where most homeowners switch from hauling bags to ordering a bulk delivery, since 2 cubic yards is a typical minimum for many mulch suppliers.
A small flower bed sits at the opposite end of the scale. A 6 ft by 4 ft bed at a light 2-inch depth needs only 4 cubic feet, or about 2 bags of standard 2-cubic-foot mulch — small enough that a single trip to the garden center with two bags in the trunk covers the whole project.
A foundation planting bed shows how depth affects volume more than area might suggest. A narrow 25 ft by 3 ft bed against the house, mulched at a deeper 4 inches to help with weed suppression and moisture retention near the foundation, needs 25 × 3 × (4/12) = 25 cubic feet, or 13 bags — nearly the same cubic footage as a bed twice as wide at the shallower 2-inch depth, which is why depth is often the bigger lever than bed size when estimating totals.
Common misconceptions
"More mulch is always better for the plants." Not past a certain depth. Mulch piled deeper than about 4 inches can hold too much moisture against roots and stems, encouraging fungal growth and root rot, and can even prevent oxygen and water from reaching the soil properly. Two to three inches is the sweet spot for most beds — thicker isn't a bonus, it's a liability.
"Piling mulch up against the tree trunk protects the roots." This is called volcano mulching, and it damages trees. Mulch stacked against bark traps moisture against the trunk, which invites rot, disease, and insect infestation, and can eventually girdle and kill the tree. Mulch rings should be flat and doughnut-shaped, kept 2-3 inches clear of the trunk itself.
