How the sod calculator works
The sod calculator estimates the number of rolls of sod needed for a rectangular lawn based on its length and width. It calculates the total area in square feet, divides by the roll size to get the number of rolls, and estimates how many pallets you need based on a standard pallet capacity of 50 rolls.

The formula explained
Lawn area
Area = L × W. For a 50′ × 40′ lawn: 50 × 40 = 2,000 sq ft.
Rolls needed
Rolls = ceil(Area / roll size). With 10 sq ft rolls: 2,000 / 10 = 200 rolls.
Pallets
Pallets = ceil(rolls / 50). 200 / 50 = 4 pallets.

Tips for laying sod
Prepare the soil properly
Till the soil to a depth of 4-6 inches, remove rocks and debris, and level the surface. Add 2-3 inches of topsoil or compost if your native soil is poor. The soil grade should slope away from the house for drainage. Rake smooth and lightly compact before laying sod.
Stagger the seams like brickwork
Lay rolls in a staggered pattern, offsetting the end joints like a brick wall. This prevents long seams that could open up as the sod shrinks. Butt the rolls tightly together without overlapping or leaving gaps.
Roll and water immediately
After laying each section, roll the sod with a lawn roller (filled 1/3 with water) to ensure good soil contact. Water thoroughly within 30 minutes of installation — the soil should be wet 4-6 inches deep. Keep foot traffic off the new sod for at least 2 weeks.
Real-world context
A 65 ft by 35 ft backyard (2,275 sq ft) sodded with standard 10 sq ft rolls needs 2,275 ÷ 10 = 228 rolls, which comes to 228 ÷ 50 = 5 pallets. That is a typical mid-size suburban backyard job, and ordering by the pallet rather than the loose roll is standard practice once a job crosses roughly 400-500 sq ft, since forklift-delivered pallets are far cheaper per roll than hand-loaded individual rolls.
A corner-lot front yard made of an L-shaped area — a 40 ft by 30 ft main section plus a 15 ft by 20 ft side strip, totaling 1,500 sq ft — sodded with a supplier's 9 sq ft rolls needs 1,500 ÷ 9 = 167 rolls, or 167 ÷ 50 = 4 pallets. Breaking an irregular lot into simple rectangles and summing the areas, as this example does, is the standard workaround for the calculator's rectangle-only input.
On the small end, patching a dead 8 ft by 6 ft spot near a driveway (48 sq ft) needs 48 ÷ 10 = 5 rolls — just 1 pallet's worth, though most suppliers will not break a pallet for such a small order, so homeowners either buy individual rolls at a markup or coordinate with a landscaper already picking up a full pallet for another job.
Common misconceptions
"Sod gives you a finished lawn the moment it's laid down." Not quite. Freshly laid sod has roots that are still severed from the soil it was grown in, and it typically takes 2-3 weeks of daily watering before the roots knit into the new ground. Foot traffic and mowing before that point can tear the seams apart.
"Any leftover sod can just sit and wait until I'm ready to use it." Sod is a living, perishable product. Rolled sod generates heat internally and can start dying from the inside within 24-36 hours of harvest, especially in warm weather. Suppliers and installers plan delivery for the same day as installation rather than stockpiling rolls in advance.
