How the pool volume calculator works
The pool volume calculator estimates the water capacity of rectangular, circular, and oval pools. It calculates the volume in cubic feet based on the pool's dimensions and shape, then converts to gallons — one cubic foot of water equals 7.48 US gallons.
For rectangular pools, the volume is length times width times average depth. For circular pools, the formula uses pi times radius squared times depth. For oval pools, the calculator uses length times width times depth times 0.8 (a shape factor that approximates the elliptical area).
Volume-to-gallons conversion and chemical dosing ratios follow ANSI/APSP/ICC-5, the American National Standard for Residential Inground Swimming Pools maintained by the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals.

The formula explained
Rectangular pool
V = L × W × D. A 30′ × 15′ pool with 6′ depth: 30 × 15 × 6 = 2,700 cu ft. Gallons: 2,700 × 7.48 = 20,196 gallons.
Circular pool
V = π × r² × D. A 24′ diameter pool (12′ radius) at 4′ deep: π × 144 × 4 = 1,809.6 cu ft. Gallons: 1,809.6 × 7.48 = 13,535 gallons.
Oval pool
V = L × W × D × 0.8. A 25′ × 13′ oval at 5′ deep: 25 × 13 × 5 × 0.8 = 1,300 cu ft. Gallons: 1,300 × 7.48 = 9,724 gallons.
Worked example
A rectangular pool 40′ × 20′ with a shallow end of 3.5′ and deep end of 8′. Average depth = (3.5 + 8) / 2 = 5.75 ft.
Use cases for the pool volume calculator
Chemical treatment
Chlorine, shock, algaecide, and pH adjusters all require exact volume-based dosing. Overdosing wastes chemicals and can irritate swimmers. Underdosing leaves the pool vulnerable to algae and bacteria growth.
Heater sizing
Pool heaters are rated by BTU output per hour. The required BTU depends on pool volume, desired temperature rise, and climate. A larger pool needs a bigger heater or longer heating time.
Water filling cost
Know the cost to fill your pool based on local water rates. A 20,000-gallon pool at $0.006 per gallon costs about $120 to fill. Factor in evaporation refills of 500-1,000 gallons per month.
Filter pump sizing
The pool pump should circulate the entire volume in 8-10 hours for optimal filtration. Divide the gallon volume by 480 (8 hours x 60 minutes) to get the minimum flow rate in GPM needed.
Tips for pool volume accuracy
Calculate average depth carefully
For pools with sloped floors, measure the depth at the shallow end and the deep end, then average them. For pools with multiple depth sections (play pools), calculate each section separately and add the volumes together.
Subtract displacement from features
Steps, ladders, benches, and tanning ledges displace water and reduce the total volume. For chemical dosing, the displaced volume is usually small enough to ignore. For exact water billing, estimate displacement at 5-10% of total volume.
Re-measure after renovations
If you resurface, add a spa, or modify the pool shape, recalculate the volume. A new plaster layer can reduce depth by 1/2 inch, changing the volume by several hundred gallons. Updated chemical dosing prevents over or under treatment.

Above-ground circular pools are one of the most common backyard installs. Large family oval pools show how the 0.8 shape factor affects the total. A 33 ft by 18 ft oval pool averaging 5 ft deep computes as 33 × 18 × 5 × 0.8 = 2,376 cu ft, or about 17,772 gallons, weighing roughly 148,222 lbs when full — a load heavy enough that pool builders need to confirm the deck and surrounding soil can bear that concentrated weight before construction.
Common misconceptions
"An oval pool holds about the same volume as a rectangle with matching length and width." Not true. The calculator applies a 0.8 shape factor to oval pools because the rounded ends hold noticeably less water than a true rectangle — treating an oval like a rectangle overestimates volume by roughly 20%, which throws off chemical dosing.
"You only need to measure the deep end to get an accurate depth." This overestimates volume significantly. Most pools slope from a shallow end to a deep end, so the correct input is average depth — typically the sum of shallow and deep measurements divided by two — not the single deepest point, which can overstate volume by a thousand gallons or more on a sloped pool.
