How the roofing calculator works
The roofing calculator estimates the surface area of a gable roof based on the building footprint and roof pitch. It calculates the footprint area, applies a pitch multiplier to get the actual roof surface area, converts to roofing squares (100 sq ft each), and estimates the number of shingle bundles needed.
Roof pitch is expressed as inches of rise per 12 inches of horizontal run. A 6/12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of run. The pitch multiplier converts the flat footprint area to the sloped roof area. For example, a 6/12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.118, meaning the roof surface is 11.8% larger than the footprint.

The formula explained
Pitch multiplier
Mult = sqrt((pitch/12)² + 1). For a 6/12 pitch: sqrt((6/12)² + 1) = sqrt(0.25 + 1) = sqrt(1.25) = 1.118.
Roof area
Roof area = footprint × multiplier × 2 (for two sides). For a 40′ × 30′ footprint (1,200 sq ft) with 6/12 pitch: 1,200 × 1.118 × 2 = 2,683 sq ft (for two gable sides).
Squares and bundles
Squares = roof area / 100. 2,683 / 100 = 26.83 squares. Round up to 27. Bundles = squares × 3. 27 × 3 = 81 bundles.

A 50′ × 28′ house with an 8/12 roof pitch and 1 ft overhang, 15% waste.

Home re-roofing
Replace an existing roof with new shingles. The calculator gives you the material quantity for ordering. Add the cost of removing old shingles, underlayment, and flashing to your total budget.

Tips for roofing projects
Install drip edge along all edges
Drip edge metal flashing along the eaves and rakes directs water into the gutters and prevents water from wicking back under the shingles. It is inexpensive but often overlooked by DIY roofers. Install it under the underlayment along the eaves and over it along the rakes.
Proper ventilation extends roof life
Attic ventilation with ridge vents and soffit vents keeps the roof deck cool and dry. Without proper ventilation, heat buildup can warp shingles and cause premature failure. The rule of thumb is 1 sq ft of vent for every 300 sq ft of attic floor area.
Nail pattern matters
Use 4 nails per shingle in standard areas and 5-6 nails per shingle in high-wind areas. Nail placement follows the manufacturer's nailing pattern — too high and the shingle may lift, too low and the nail head may be exposed. Use corrosion-resistant roofing nails with 1-inch heads.
Real-world context
A small bungalow with a 36 ft by 24 ft footprint, 1 ft overhang, and a modest 4/12 pitch has an adjusted footprint of 38 × 26 = 988 sq ft. The 4/12 pitch multiplier is only 1.054, so the roof surface comes out to 988 × 1.054 ≈ 1,041 sq ft. At 10% waste that is about 11.5 squares, rounded up to 12 squares, or 35 three-tab bundles — a low-pitch roof adds relatively little extra material over the flat footprint.
Steep roofs tell a different story. A 24 ft by 24 ft detached garage with a 1 ft overhang and a steep 12/12 pitch (a 45-degree roof, common in colder climates for snow shedding) has the same 676 sq ft adjusted footprint but a pitch multiplier of 1.414 — the maximum common multiplier. That yields a roof surface of about 956 sq ft, and after 20% waste for the extra cutting steep roofs require, the order comes to roughly 12 squares and 35 bundles, nearly identical square count to the shallower bungalow above despite the garage having a much smaller footprint, purely because of the steeper pitch.
Insurance claim estimates often involve mid-size homes with moderate pitches. A 45 ft by 30 ft house with a 1 ft overhang and 6/12 pitch has an adjusted footprint of 47 × 32 = 1,504 sq ft. With the 6/12 multiplier of 1.118, the roof surface works out to about 1,682 sq ft. Adding a 15% waste factor (reasonable for a roof with several valleys and hips) brings the total to roughly 19.3 squares, rounded up to 20 squares — right in the middle of the "20-25 squares for a 2,000 sq ft home" range cited by roofing suppliers.
Common misconceptions
"Roof square footage roughly equals the home's living space square footage." Not even close. Roof area is based on the building's footprint and pitch, not interior living space — a two-story home has roughly the same roof area as a one-story home with the same footprint, even though it has double the living square footage.
"A steeper roof pitch always costs proportionally more for materials." The multiplier grows, but not linearly. Going from a 4/12 to an 8/12 pitch (doubling the rise) only increases the surface area multiplier from about 1.054 to 1.202 — roughly a 14% material increase, not a 100% one. Labor costs, however, often rise faster than materials on steep roofs due to safety equipment and slower work pace.
